Since the October 2023 price increase, the 7-day Ordinary pass (¥50,000) is a tougher sell than it used to be. As a rough rule of thumb, a single Tokyo ⇄ Kyoto/Osaka round-trip on the Shinkansen (~¥28,000–30,000) plus one more medium trip is roughly the break-even point for the 7-day pass.

Add up the regular fares for the long-distance legs you actually plan to take, then compare that to the pass price in the calculator above. If your tickets total clearly more than the pass, buy the pass; if they're clearly less, buy tickets; if it's close, the flexibility may tip it.
The JR Group sets the nationwide pass price in Japanese yen. Resellers convert this into other currencies, sometimes at a fair rate and sometimes with a markup. These are the official yen list prices to measure against.

The nationwide pass is one option among several. Depending on your trip, one of these may save you more.
For one or two intercity trips, paying per journey is usually cheaper than a nationwide pass, and you can reserve seats freely.
If you stay in one area (e.g. JR East, Kansai, or Hokkaido), a regional pass covers it for far less than the nationwide pass.
