JR Pass Green Car vs Ordinary Car
Published 9 May 2026 · Updated 31 May 2026
The JR Pass comes in two flavours: Ordinary and Green. Green is the first-class equivalent and costs roughly 40% more. Is the upgrade worth it? For most travellers, no, but there are cases where it's a genuinely nice spend.
What the Green Car gets you
- Wider, plusher seats with more legroom and recline, usually in a 2+2 layout instead of 2+3.
- Quieter, less crowded carriages: Green cars rarely sell out the way Ordinary can.
- A calmer boarding experience on busy routes and peak travel days.
What it doesn't do: get you there any faster. It's the same train at the same speed: you're paying for comfort, not time.
The price difference
Using the official yen prices, the 7-day pass is ¥50,000 Ordinary vs ¥70,000 Green; 14-day is ¥80,000 vs ¥110,000; 21-day is ¥100,000 vs ¥140,000. So Green adds roughly ¥20,000–40,000 depending on duration, a meaningful premium.
When Green is worth it
- You're taking many long rides and value space to work or rest.
- You're travelling in peak season when Ordinary cars are packed.
- The comfort genuinely matters to you and the extra cost is comfortable in your budget.
When Ordinary is the smarter pick
For most trips, Ordinary seats are perfectly comfortable: reserved Ordinary on the Shinkansen is already spacious by global standards. If you're optimising value, put the saved ¥20,000–40,000 toward hotels, food or experiences. Green is a treat, not a saving.
